Freezer Tips from the Chef’s Kitchen

Using a Chef's Knife Joanne Lusted, chef and director of Nella Cucina Culinary School in Toronto, Ontario, shares a few tips for keeping an organized and functional freezer.

These strategies will help you stay on budget, eat healthy and look like a superstar when you turn out delicious, healthy meals with minimal effort and cleanup.

  1. Lay items in plastic freezer bags evenly onto a tray until frozen so that contents freeze flat for quicker defrosting and more efficient storage.

  2. Have several containers of similar items? Move the newest addition to the back and the oldest item to the front to use first. First in, first out.

  3. Circle vs. square: What shape is your freezer? Trade in your odd-shaped containers for square varieties for easy stacking and most efficient use of space.

  4. Frozen food is like last season’s trendy clothing: If you haven’t touched it in three months, get rid of it.
