American Grown
By: Michelle Obama
Photography: Quentin Bacon
(Crown Publishers, $30)

In 2009, First Lady Michelle Obama and a group of students from Washington, DC, planted the first seeds of what would become the White House Kitchen Garden. In an effort to create a greater national dialogue about the food we eat and where it comes from, Obama’s first book, American Grown, builds on the spirit of her nationwide Let’s Move! campaign against childhood obesity as she examines the role of organic gardens in communities across the United States.

Beautiful, lush photography vividly brings to life the story of the White House Kitchen Garden, introducing us to the chefs, gardeners and farmers who work there. Seasonal fruits and vegetables, including rhubarb, cauliflower and different varieties of lettuce, berries and peppers, comprise the book’s palate-pleasing recipes. Although some recipes will require one or two clean substitutions, American Grown is still one of the year’s healthiest cookbooks and a must-have addition for clean eaters.
