I have struggled with weight my entire life and with managing type 2 diabetes since August 2008. The GOCLEAN45 challenge helped propel me to my healthiest point, probably in my adult life. I had started to make some serious changes about a year ago, but I felt stuck, and due to my insulin resistance, it was very difficult — if not impossible — to lose weight. I recently visited with my endocrinologist and had some amazing results:
• A1C dropped to 5.1 (prior results over the past year were 7.1, and then 6.1 last summer).
• Instead of testing three to four times a day, I now test three to four times in a week!
• Instead of visiting my endocrinologist quarterly, I will now visit every 6 months.
• I was removed from my injectable medication and now only use Metformin to help control my diabetes.
• My cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL and LDL are all in the acceptable range.
Fitnesswise, I walked religiously throughout GOCLEAN45, sometimes with a walking buddy, sometimes on my own. My personal goal was 10,000-plus steps every day, which I achieved most days, and some days I had 15,000 to 20,000 steps. Now I’m working with a friend who happens to be a personal trainer, and we’re going to increase my cardio and add some resistance training.
Beyond Week 4, I found it difficult to keep up with the meal plan due to my schedule, but I stuck with the basic principles of the program and still ate clean for the entire 45 days. I didn’t have any added sugar, no dairy, no gluten, no processed food (with the exception of a single glass of red wine on a dinner date).
At the end of GOCLEAN45, I lost 21 pounds in 45 days. This was astounding to me. Over the past years, it has taken me six months or more to lose 20 pounds. I was no longer shopping in the “plus” section of stores. It feels amazing to be able to go into a store and shop in the “misses” section. I have more energy (way more!), I sleep better, I feel more happiness because I’m not suffering from fatigue, joint pain and headaches, I feel younger and I have inspired others to consider clean eating. The cherry on top was when I attended a holiday gathering at work and saw many people I haven’t seen in a while, and I was approached by more than a few people who commented on my appearance and wanted to know what I am doing.
