A ton of research has shown that eating nuts reduces the risk of two major chronic diseases – type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. But do nuts actually extend life?
Researchers from Harvard University, the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Brigham and Women’s Hospital examined the connection between eating nuts and total mortality in over 76,000 female participants from the Nurses’ Health Study and in over 42,000 male participants from the Health Professionals Follow-up Study and found that nut consumption was inversely associated with total mortality among both women and men, even after adjustment for other risk factor.
How many nuts? About an ounce or two a day seems to be the magic number! What kind? Any and all! Try almonds, walnuts, pistachios and peanuts. And don’t worry about nuts being “fattening.” Other studies have shown that people who eat nuts regularly have lower body mass indexes (BMIs) than those who don’t!
