Oven cleaner is possibly one of the most hazardous cleaning products in your home. Most use harsh ingredients and can cause burning of the skin and eyes and difficulty breathing if proper precautions aren’t taken. Fortunately, there’s a nontoxic way to clean the oven that really works. In this recipe, castile soap helps to clean and lift away oils, while baking soda and sea salt are effective scouring agents that scrub away tough stains without scratching. But the secret ingredient in this recipe is time – let the oven cleaner sit for several hours to allow the ingredients to work, then simply wipe it away, leaving a nontoxic shine behind with minimal effort.
Castile Oven Cleaner
Ingredients:
- 1/3 cup castile soap
- 2/3 cup baking soda
- 2 tbsp sea salt
1. To a small bowl, add castile soap, baking soda and salt; stir to combine. Add 3 to 4 tbsp water and stir to form a smooth paste.

2. Remove racks from oven and use a sponge or dishcloth to spread paste over the interior of the oven. (TIP: If you have an electric oven, avoid applying on heating elements.) Let sit for several hours or overnight.

3. Dip sponge in warm water, wring out the excess and wipe away the paste, scrubbing any areas that have stubborn grime. Rinse sponge and repeat until paste is removed and oven is clean.
