4. Made from pure maple syrup, you can get these delightfully crunchy flakes (formerly called Equinox Organic Maple Flakes) in a grinding mill or by the bag and look forward to half the calories of sugar and close to a third of the calories in raw honey. $8 to $11, igourmet.com

5. Made from a naturally occurring sugar alcohol found in some plant, vegetable and fruit fibers and completely GMO-free, xylitol is a good substitute for table sugar (though some find it slightly sweeter). Warning: Toxic to dogs. $8 to $28, xlear.com
