There’s only so much candy we can eat in a day. Believe me, even my candy-crazed toddler has her limits. Instead of opting to hand out the traditional candy (that truthfully not everyone can have, especially those with food allergies) for trick-or-treaters, consider adding one of these 10 healthier snacks to your candy bowl this year.
1. Sun Maid Fruity Raisin Snacks
A go-to in my house year-round (it makes a wonderful pinata stuffer for birthdays), the variety of no-added-sugar Sun Maid Fruity Raisin Snacks are a wonderful addition to any Halloween treat bowl. With just 60 calories, primarily coming from carbohydrates in the natural sugar sources, it’s a great instant energy source. These raisins also double as a wonderful do-it-yourself trail mix addition if you have leftovers!
2. Mini LaraBar
For just 100 calories and 2 grams of added sugar, this whole-food-based nut bar is a great way to satisfy a sweet tooth while also providing healthy fats. It’s the perfect grab-and-go item for kids with dairy allergies to enjoy something sweet, too! LaraBar’s chocolate is vegan, meaning it’s safe for those with an allergy to milk.
3. Bear Real Fruit Rolls
My daughter spied these on the shelf at Target one day, and they’ve been a staple since in our kitchen. I love that the rolls have no added sugar and are made from 100% fruits. Plus, they have adorable packaging that will get even the toughest candy critic excited.
4. UTZ Halloween Pretzel Treats
Don’t knock these pretzels out of Halloween consideration because they’re a simple carbohydrate! I love stocking up one these because if we have leftovers from the candy bowl (which we usually do), they double as a great snack when paired with hummus and carrots for school that my littles love.
5. That’s It Mini Fruit Bars
Similar to the Bear Fruit line, these fruit-based bars are made with no added sugar – and they’re perfectly portable for a fun treat. What I love about That’s It is that the brand also packs 2 grams of fiber into each treat and has very transparent packaging (literally what’s on the package is in the bar), making it easy to please a picky toddler.
6. Skinny Pop Popcorn Bags
This is a great whole-grain snack that’s packed with 2 grams of fiber. The caveat here is popcorn is a choking hazard for younger eaters, so be sure to have this snack in your “older kids” bowl to pick from! Which reminds me, do you have two separate bowls? If not, it may be something to consider this year.
7. Pirate’s Booty Halloween Edition
While this lacks the fiber of the popcorn above, it’s a kid favorite in my house and makes a great sub in lunch boxes when you promise leftover Halloween candy. Unlike chips, this snack is baked, not fried. This keeps the total fat down on the snack in comparison to a cheese ball counterpart.
8. Good Health Monster Shaped Veggie Chips
These are chips, not veggies! But, speaking with your kids while enjoying these from their Halloween stash is a great way to get them excited about trying something they may otherwise not be into (i.e., spinach, carrots, or radishes) when you talk about the colors they provide for the monsters.
9. Hippeas Vegan White Cheddar Halloween Pack
Each pack of Hippeas provides 2 grams of protein and 1 gram of dietary fiber, giving it a little more nutritional bang for your buck in comparison to other options on this list. Plus, unlike the popular cheese balls that come out this time of year in pumpkin shapes, these are vegan and 100% dairy free, too. But don’t let that fool you, they still taste just as good!
10. Made Good Granola Mini Bars Chocolate Chip Halloween Pack
Gluten- and nut-free, these mini bars may be smaller, but they pack a ton of flavor in their 50 calories. Plus, each bar does contain some added sugars – but only 3 grams, making them a much lower sugar alternative than their mini candy bar counterparts.
